They do that, Jason, and as beautiful as the males are, I find the soft colors of the females like the one in the picture even more attractive. (Then, of course, being female myself, perhaps I am prejudiced!)
Definitely my favorites. I haven't seen many around recently, since we lost the trees around us. But every now and then I catch a glimpse and it lifts my heart.
They do become scarce in our yards in fall, Jayne. I've noticed this for several years now, but the numbers begin to pick up around this time and continue to grow through winter, spring and summer. So perhaps you'll be seeing more in your yard soon.
I love cardinals as well, especially in winter when they add such dramatic color to the landscape.
